Through the Mist
Shenandoah National Park, located in Virginia, has many beautiful waterfalls and vistas. If you look closer though, you might find something more unique.
On this particular day, we had picked a late afternoon start so we could take advantage of the forecasted rain and mist amongst the waterfalls we were going to visit. On our way, we had noticed trees close by the visitor center that were being enveloped in the mist. The conditions weren’t quite right, the fog wasn’t quite thick enough. While there was no guarantee that the conditions would improve as the afternoon went on, I decided to focus on one of the nearby waterfalls, and come back to the tree if the fog and mist didn’t lift.
On our way back from Dark Hollow Falls, my wife reminded me of the trees I had wanted to photograph. When we got back to the area with the trees, we could barely see 50-feet in front of us. The conditions had become just right for what I was looking for.
Through the mist, the trees took on a darker, eery tone. For me, the image conveys a sense of solitude, even though there was a road only 30 feet behind the far tree.
